8 Reviews for Sanctuary: Present Tense

  1. There is no safety in numbers, or in anything else. ~James Thurber. And yet we seek safety: we look for sanctuary in the modern world, and there is no obvious door on which to knock. The very different interpretations of the concept of sanctuary in the four stories I heard on Saturday afternoon made me wonder again how one word could describe such radically different concepts. There is nothing safe about the sacred. And nothing sacred about being safe. It is in the tension between the two that we experience holiness. Enjoy these stories.

  2. Each of these stories took us through different paths to safety - teen years, weather, mass murder and social injustice. Each teller gave us a sense of the way they got through - and challenged us to think of our own stories. Storytelling depends on the connection with the listeners - and so each teller worked with the attention and energies of the audience in a masterful way. An inspiring beginning to a week of examination of this theme, And what was Paula doing up at 4 am? Well, that’s another story for another time.

  3. Second attempt: mainly done to erase my email from the SitH website. If all goes well, it will happen. Meanwhile, this is a good show to see. If I do say so myself. Ann

  4. Highly enjoyable words from some excellent storytellers. However, please make sure your stories fit the theme! Some of them I couldn’t quite figure what the relevance to sanctuary was.

  5. You must see this show! Each Sanctuary storyteller has such a different voice and brings alive such a different corner of the world, yet quilted together they create a beautiful mosaic of the human struggle to find safety. Thank you Northstar–especially to Diego Vazquez for his voice of compassion–shining the light into corners where so many of us refuse to go.

  6. Nice, solid mix of storytellers who offer all of us sanctuary from cookiecuttered tales and Erector Set drama.

  7. A fine assortment of tales that travel roads from the Southwest to NYC and explore, not only what sanctuary is, but how and when and why we experience a sense of sanctuary and who our companions may be. The places may be unexpected and the companions surprising, but the grace is a gift. So are these stories.

  8. Sanctuary came in many shapes last night as Andre brouht us to desolation and hope, too, in a war-polluted paradise… Diego gave some angels a ride and would go back for them… and Katie has a dark side(who knew?)And Howard? Well, don’t go into an elevator with Howard, OK? OK. I think it was the range of ideas and all manner of sanctuaries that got my attention. I was glad I came. Great work guys.
