Demons on the Prairie

Joan Calof

There were Jewish farmers on the North Dakota prairie in the 1890’s! The Calof family homesteaded there under unbelievable conditions. One of my ancestors wrote, “I was very close to the living level of an animal.” When her first child was born, she struggled between old country superstitions and belief.

3 Reviews for Demons on the Prairie

  1. Good Show…really balanced. We’ve come a long way baby! You just keep being the sweet Lyrical Curmudgeon that you are. I want to see an enchore.

  2. Joan is in top form with her Demons on the Prairie. She painted a sharp, vivid, well researched portrait of the lives of her immigrant ancestors as they crossed from Eastern Europe to scratch out a new life in the primitive conditions of the vast mid-western prairie before the turn of the 20th century. Her characters are three-dimentional and capture your heart. Her telling is masterful.
